Supporting Immigrant Families & Their Providers:
School-Based Health Centers (SBHCs) are trusted spaces where students, families, and staff should be able to seek care without fear. SBHCs serve individuals from a wide range of backgrounds, and share a responsibility to preserve these spaces as places of safe healthcare.
- Be Prepared and Follow Establish Protocols: Preparation helps ensure patient safety, protects confidentiality, and supports staff in responding appropriately and lawfully. SBHCs should maintain written protocols identifying designated staff or legal counsel responsible for responding to external agency requests. Reach out to your school and legal teams for official protocols and procedures.
- Understand Your Rights and the Rights of Patients and Families: Knowing your rights as healthcare providers will help to guide appropriate responses if immigration officials enter a school or SBHC. SBHCs have the right to require proper legal authorization before granting access to facilities, patients, or records. Designated staff should be prepared to assert the rights of the organization, while staff should understand their own rights.
