Educating and Empowering Youth and Families with HPV Vaccine Information

Join the Washington State Department of Health and the Washington State HPV Free Taskforce as they share knowledge and insights around Washington state’s HPV trends and vaccination data. The presenters will offer guidance and tips on how adolescent and school-based health providers can effectively communicate with diverse youth and families around HPV prevention, while also empowering youth and families with resources and knowledge to make informed decisions and be advocates in their health care. Moreover, the presenters will speak to their “HPV at Nine’ initiative and elaborate on how their efforts to educate and raise awareness extend to the community level.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES: 

Participants will be able to:

  1. List the six types of cancer and other diseases that the HPV vaccine protects against.
  2. Name at least three reasons why vaccinating for HPV at age nine is beneficial
  3. Describe the three steps to the announcement approach
  4. List at least one resource for HPV education

WHO SHOULD ATTEND: 

School-based health center providers, adolescent health providers, and those serving adolescents/youth in schools, including school district staff (e.g., nurses, counselors, social workers, teachers)

PRESENTER: 

Nicole RhodesCHES, B.S. Public Health. Health educator at the Washington State Department of Health focusing on adolescent and adult vaccine education. Nicole has been in this position for over two years and has been heavily involved in the implementation of Washington state’s ‘HPV at Nine’ initiative.

Sherri Zorn, MD, FAAP Pediatrician, Consultant, Quality Improvement Coach affiliated with Washington HPV Free Task Force and the Washington Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics. Dr. Zorn has more than 25 years’ experience in general pediatric care with a focus on improving immunization practices and coverage rates at the local, state, and national level. Dr. Zorn has provided coaching to more than 40 clinics on how to increase HPV vaccination rates at age nine. She’s presented at several national immunization webinars and was a recent guest on the American Academy of Pediatrics “Pediatrics on Call Podcast” (episode 175)

Carrie Jenner, MD, FAAP Pediatrician with Virginia Mason Franciscan Health for over 26 years, currently Pediatric Medical Director for Franciscan Medical Group. She is Co-Chair of the Pierce County Immunization Coalition, whose goal is to increase immunization rates for all Pierce County residents. She is also a planning committee member of the WA HPV Free Task Force.
